Amateur sports in the Netherlands have suffered from cuts in government funding over the past years. As a result, sports federations have been forced to increase their members’ sports fees. This leads to a decline in memberships during the Covid-19 crisis. Many clubs are struggling to survive. These circumstances have made it extremely unaffordable to provide members with licensed coaching. During this internship, your job is to help contribute to a solution using Computer Vision and Artificial Intelligence.

By using Computer Vision and Artificial Intelligence, we want to provide automated feedback to players by analyzing their practice sessions and indicating areas for improvement. In short, we want a digital coach that can replace an expensive human coach.
To collect data relatively easily, you can use our ping pong table as a research tool. Ping pong is a fast and technical sport where a coach must pay attention to many small details that affect the game. For example, you may hit the ball early or late during a serve, which affects the amount of speed, spin and possible angles. It is also important to bend your knees so you can get “under” the ball etc.
During this internship, you will build a prototype that can analyze ping pong images and provide feedback based on the agreed metrics.
